Academic Resources

Academic Support Center

The Academic Support Center is designed to provide the additional support that students with learning differences need to be successful.  Students in our program receive one-on-one and small group instruction outside of the regular classroom that enhances their ability to navigate our robust college preparatory curriculum.  We work with each student to help them manage their time as we simultaneously develop specifically identified academic skills.

A team approach is employed to identify and design academic interventions. Classroom teacher observations, learning specialist observations, educational consultant input, prior academic performance and educational testing are all considered prior to establishing a plan of academic intervention for the student. Interventions typically include organizational strategies, time management, study skills, ADHD support, reading comprehension, writing and math.

English Language Development

Many international students come to us with a range of English language skills. The mission of the English Language Development (ELD) Department is to help every student learn English and be successful not only in ELD classes, but in all classes. We carry out this mission through rigorous and appropriately leveled classes within the ELD Department. Diagnostic testing, given up arrival and again during finals, ensures that students are progressing and that they are placed in the appropriate ELD level.

ELD focuses on whole language development, meaning we teach all areas of English – grammar, reading, writing, listening, and speaking – concurrently and not in isolation. This better prepares students to enter into mainstream classes taught in English as well as for the demands of attending college in the United States. For students who need extra help, tutoring is available at an additional cost.

Technology

We believe that technology has an educational use as a proactive, creative tool and technological fluency is an essential part of college preparation. All LTP students receive a MacBook Air laptop computer for their personal academic use. Usage of laptops is monitored during class hours and study halls in order to ensure appropriate use. Internet content filters are put in place when applicable.

Technology also has potential pitfalls and distractions. As such, we strive to direct students toward techniques of responsible, effective use of all electronic devices, and we monitor use during class hours and study halls. Internet access ends for students each evening after curfew. Content filters are in use to ensure a safe working environment. Underclassman students' personal devices, such as cell phones, tablets, and laptops are collected on weeknights at curfew to ensure that students are sleeping without distraction from technology.
